Spring is a beautiful time to visit England. Having left winter behind, the weather is generally mild, and the countryside is bursting with colour. Temperatures in April range from 44°F to 53°F (7 °C to 12 °C), and in May, the mercury can rise to 60°F (16 °C).

It depends what you want from your trip. April brings blossom, wild garlic and fresh green landscapes. May is warmer, brighter and one of the loveliest months for exploring on foot or by bike. By early June, the days are at their longest and summer feels just around the corner.

Very. Cooler temperatures make longer days on the trail comfortable, while the countryside is green and full of spring colour. Routes are generally quieter than during the main summer months too, particularly outside school holidays and long weekends.

Absolutely. Spring brings comfortable riding temperatures, quieter country lanes and plenty of daylight for a proper day out. The Cotswolds, Devon and Cornwall are particularly rewarding at this time of year, with green landscapes, flowering hedgerows and plenty of good places to stop along the way.

Think layers. Bring a lightweight waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes or cycling kit, something warm for cooler mornings and evenings, and sun protection for brighter days. English spring weather can change quickly, so it pays to be ready for a bit of everything.

Generally, spring is quieter than July and August, particularly in April and early May. Popular villages and attractions can still be busy over Easter and bank holiday weekends, but the trails, lanes and countryside often feel much calmer than they do at the height of summer.
